The Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting (MATI) offers a rigorous graduate curriculum geared to preparing students for careers in the language services industry. MATI is offered to students working in three main language tracks, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish, paired with English, or in one of the top 10 internet-user languages. Students will receive a theoretical grounding in translation and interpreting studies, and language-specific training in interlingual processing, localization and oral interpretation skills.
Language-specific courses in translation prepare students to handle a wide range of texts and genres, from literary works, academic papers and press releases, to research reports and financial documents, as well as new media formats, including film, podcasts, websites, and blog content. Interpretation courses provide practical training in consecutive, conference and community oral interpreting and sight translation, simulating a variety of social service, education, healthcare, and legal settings. Coursework also includes foundational studies in machine translation technologies, software localization and terminology management systems. Students and graduates will benefit from internship opportunities, peer-mentoring, and other networking avenues through MATI's affiliation with industry employers and professional organizations including the American Translators Association, New York Circle of Translators and Interpreters, and Association of Translations and Interpreters in Ontario.
